- Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Starts Self-reliance and Improvement of Industrial Complex Energy
- The project aims to reduce greenhouse gases by 25% and to realize RE100 Industrial Complex by 2040 for energy independence

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency announced on July 7 that the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex (5, 6th District) has been designated as the first National Demonstrative Smart Green Industrial Complex in Korea.

The Smart Green Industrial Complex is to create new industrial complexes as future industrial complexes such as minimizing energy use, expanding renewable energy supply, establishing infrastructure for supporting corporate production, and comfortable settlement conditions. It is an industrial complex that promotes digitalization, energy independence, and eco-friendly activities such as tenant companies, infrastructure, residential facilities, support facilities, and public facilities.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has established an institutional basis through the revision of the Industrial Location Act (2020.12) and has prepared detailed development standards by notifying the guidelines for the designation and development of smart green industrial complexes (2021.12).

In addition, in April last year, Saemangeum National Industrial Complex (5, 6 District) was selected as a candidate for the Smart Green Industrial Complex in order to establish a successful model for the Smart Green Industrial Complex and to promote its nationwide spread.

At the groundbreaking ceremony of the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex (5, 6 District) held in December 2020, the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency declared the vision of the Smart Green of the National Industrial Complex and in December 2021, it established the Smart Green Industrial Complex Basic Plan (proposal) and requested the designation of the National Demonstration Industrial Complex.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport designated the National Demonstrative Smart Green Industrial Complex for the first time after the deliberation of the Industrial Location Policy Council last month.

Saemangeum Smart Green Industrial Complex will be an industrial complex for energy independence, further than reducing greenhouse gas by 25%. By 2040, RE100 (supply and consumption of 100% of industrial complex energy as renewable energy) will be realized.

In order to achieve the goal, a total of 180MW of solar power generation facilities will be created through 30MW of building rooftop (parking lot, etc.), 30MW of leading business, and 120MW of additional construction in the short term (~2029). In the long term (~2040), RE100 will be supported by water solar power and fuel cell power generation.

New industries and new technologies that will be applied to industrial complexes will be ▲ energy integration platform that improves energy independence through collecting, utilizing, and monitoring energy data, and ▲ microgrid (independent grid) that can operate power and energy independently based on the energy storage system (ESS) to compensate for intermittent characteristics and volatility.

Moreover, in order to convert carbon-free fuels from coal-fired power plants, it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supply eco-friendly heat energy by utilizing ammonia mixed combustion, which does not emit carbon dioxide after combustion.

Also, a wild scarlet lily of information in a real-time collection, and monitoring can detect dangerous situations by immediately and proactively responding to the digital twin smart, integrated safety systems, and will move forward with drone control, such as deployment.

“The designation of the Saemangeum demonstration industrial complex will be the first step toward improving the constitution of industrial complexes by expanding renewable energy in industrial complexes, improving energy efficiency, realizing energy independence and carbon neutrality, enhancing the productivity of tenant companies, and leading innovation through the advancement of infrastructures such as transportation and logistics,” said Yoon Young-jung, director of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s industrial location policy division.
